Medial tibial stress syndrome(MTSS) is a common cause of shin pain. It results from repetitive forceful pronation and plantar flexion of the foot leading to periosteal inflammation along the tibia at the insertion of the soleus muscle.

Although often not serious, it can be quite disabling and progress to more serious complications if not treated properly. Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) is an inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around your tibia. Pain typically occurs along the inner border of the tibia, where muscles attach to the bone. Shin splint pain most often occurs on the inside edge of your tibia (shinbone).
